VESSELIN DIMOV BIOGRAPHIE/RESUME/PERSONAL ESSAY

I am a freelance stage director born in 1976 in Sofia.

I studied and graduated Drama Directing at National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in 2003.
Since then I have directed 13 theatre performances so far (2 state productions, 6 completely independent and 5 co-productions): Momo - M. Ende, Few Steps Silence - S. Beckett, Mishin’s Triumph - D. Harms, Offending the Audience - P. Handke, A Duel - A. Chekhov, Death and the Maiden - E. Jelinek, Underground Blues - P. Handke, Siberia - F. Mitterer, Frida - S. Domazet, Don Giovanni or the Love of Geometry - M. Frisch, Embalmed with Love - I. Dimitrov, Prophecy - P. Handke and The Love Life of the Contemporary Robots - Koltes/Bauersima/Marber) and 4 audio plays for the National radio: Pluto - R. Markova, Elisaveta Bam - D. Harms, Prophecy - P. Handke, Workshop - I. Dimitrov.

The focus of my artistic research are the borderline forms of theatre and cinema, the organic use of multimedia, non-conventional theatre texts, taboo topics and provoking of an acute state of “presence in the moment” in the context of “actor-spectator” relationship.

My vision of the best theatrical meeting is a one that reaches a deep and subtle dialog between actors and audience about the very essence of life, about the innermost truths of human nature and about the witnessing of the miracle of creation itself. My work has been described by the Bulgarian critics so far as “innovative, straight to the point, communicative, provocative, non-compromising, spiritual, etc.”

I was selected by The Drama League and participated in the summer of 2012 in a three months artistic residence in New York. There I had the precious chance to assist to Ken-Rus Schmoll for the production Red Dog Howls in NYTW as well as to observe 9 other productions in rehearsing process on Broadway, Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway. This experience helped me to learn a lot about the specifics and practices of the American theater and to develop my directorial abilities – to organize and structure more efficiently my rehearsing process, as well as to explain my creative ideas in a more simple and direct way and to learnt to trust more the process, the actors and the group energy. I was impressed by the organization of the creative process in the American theater, by the intensity and speed and the talent, positive attitude and discipline of American professional actors. I am very thankful that I was able to work together and observe in action some great artistic personalities and theater professionals in New York. That made me a better director.

I am a Founder of Theatre Company Momo – Association for alternative contemporary art /2008/, Co-founder, Member and from 2012 - Chairman of ACT Association for Independent Theatre Bulgaria /2009/ and Co-organizer /Stage Event Manager/ of the ACT Festival for Independent Theatre. I have attended 4 IETM Plenary Meetings /Vilnius, Berlin, Krakow, Copenhagen/.

I have also an extensive experience with assistantships, training programs as well as organizing and leading events, workshops and team buildings - creative theatre residencies in Holland, Germany, India, Slovakia and Macedonia; participated in 38 workshops for theatre and personal development in 11 different countries; organizer of 10 Gurdjieff Sacred Dances workshops and 7 Awareness Intensive groups in Bulgaria /2002-2013/; organizer of 26 workshops for theatre and personal development; leader of 5 workshops.
